工业润滑油应用范围很广，基础油的种类也很多，如：纯矿物油，PAO聚ɑ稀烃合成油，聚醚合成油，烷基苯油，可生物降解脂类油。当它们成为某种工业润滑油时，它们之间是不能相互混合的，例如聚醚合成油和别的工业油混合之后，其性能就会显著下降。工业润滑油在不同的应用场合中，其添加剂也不一样。室外用的液压油要有适合当地的温度变化，就不能用室内密闭环境下的液压油。另外象重载齿轮油和成型油使用条件也不同，重载齿轮油含有极压添加剂来确保可以在苛刻环境下使用，成型油，通常是纯矿物油，不含添加剂。
